President Paudel Administers Oath to Newly Appointed Chief Justice Dr. Sharma

Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma has officially assumed charge as the 33rd Chief Justice of Nepal. President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly appointed Chief Justice during a formal ceremony held at the presidential residence, Sheetal Niwas, on Tuesday.

The high-profile swearing-in ceremony was attended by top state dignitaries, including Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Balendra Shah, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal, and National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal. Immediately following the ceremony, Chief Justice Dr. Sharma proceeded to the Supreme Court to formally take over his judicial responsibilities.

President Paudel made the appointment on Tuesday on the recommendation of the Constitutional Council, in accordance with Article 129(2) of the Constitution of Nepal. The appointment followed a unanimous endorsement of Dr. Sharma’s nomination by the Parliamentary Hearing Committee during a meeting at Singha Durbar.

Born on June 18, 1970, in Birgunj, Parsa, Chief Justice Dr. Sharma boasts an illustrious academic and professional career. He holds a BL from Nepal Law Campus, an LLM from the University of Pune, India, and a PhD in labor law from Tribhuvan University.

Dr. Sharma began his career as a legal practitioner before serving as an additional judge of the High Court between 2013 and 2015. He was elevated to a Justice of the Supreme Court on April 19, 2019. With his extensive legal background, Chief Justice Dr. Sharma is slated to lead Nepal’s judiciary for a significant tenure, which will continue until June 18, 2032.
