One person killed, five injured in overnight Russian attack on Kyiv
Amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Russia launched an attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, late Tuesday night (local time). According to the city’s military administration, at least one person was killed and five others were injured in the attack. Al Jazeera reported that sounds of explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital after the Ukrainian Air Force warned of incoming ballistic missiles. This latest attack comes amidst an intensification of cross-border strikes by both Russia and Ukraine. Earlier on Monday, local officials reported that at least seven people were killed when debris from a Ukrainian drone fell onto a crowded beach in the southern Russian resort city of Gelendzhik. Russia’s state news agency TASS, citing the country’s Commissioner for Children’s Rights, reported that four of the deceased were children. Fifty-eight people were also injured in the incident, with many remaining hospitalized. Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev stated that the fatalities occurred when debris from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fell onto the beach. It remains unclear whether the drone crashed on its own or was shot down by Russian air defense systems. An analysis of CNN video footage revealed the sound of automatic gunfire from at least three weapons moments before the drone suddenly changed course and crashed onto the beach. CNN reported that the drone had flown past a nearby Russian radar installation before falling. In a statement to CNN, Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, alleged that the tragedy was the result of Russian air defense activity. “It was the work of Russian air defense forces, who shot down the drone over a beach packed with vacationers,” Kovalenko told CNN. He added that Ukraine targets only Russia’s military-industrial and economic infrastructure linked to the war effort. Russian officials have also reported ongoing Ukrainian drone attacks. According to TASS, five people were killed and six others injured following an overnight drone attack in the Moscow region. The attack ignited fires at multiple locations within an industrial zone, damaging an electrical substation and an administrative building. These fresh attacks highlight the escalating tensions in the conflict, with both sides reporting civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure amidst continuous aerial strikes.
