Bangladesh requests additional diesel supplies from India
Bangladesh has formally requested an increase in diesel supplies from India through the cross-border pipeline to help mitigate severe power and gas shortages across the country. The request was conveyed by Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood during a meeting with Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi in Dhaka. Both sides held discussions centered around expanding cross-border energy connectivity and strengthening bilateral economic cooperation.
The Indian High Commission emphasized that cross-border energy links serve as a vital pillar of the economic partnership between the two neighboring nations. Officials reaffirmed a joint commitment to enhancing energy security, promoting sustainable development, and advancing mutual interests. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit was also present during the high-level engagement at the Secretariat.
The request follows an earlier enhancement in fuel shipments in April, when an extra 5,000 tonnes of diesel began flowing via the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline. This continuous cross-border supply remains crucial for Dhaka to reinforce its domestic energy security amid ongoing volatility in global oil shipping routes and West Asian maritime trade.
