In Nepal, 48 percent of investment is Chinese and 17.9 percent is Indian

China has emerged as the largest investor country in the field of foreign investment in Nepal. According to the Economic Survey 2025/26, China accounted for 48 percent of the total approved foreign investment up to Falgun 2082, while India’s share was 17.9 percent and the combined share of other countries was 34.1 percent. China also leads in terms of the number of projects. Among the total approved projects, 45.5 percent are Chinese investments, while India’s share is 11.9 percent and other countries’ share is 42.6 percent, as noted in the Economic Survey. Currently, foreign investment is approved through two routes: the automatic route and the approval route. Up to Falgun 2082, a total of 7,951 projects with foreign investment worth NPR 625.58 billion were approved, including 968 projects through the automatic route and 6,983 projects through the approval route via the Department of Industry. It is estimated that the approved projects will create employment for approximately 362,545 people.

According to the economic survey published by the government, foreign investment worth NPR 4.07 billion has been approved in 554 projects only up to Falgun of the current fiscal year 2082-83. Among these, 377 projects are through the automatic route and 177 through the approval route. In the same period of the previous fiscal year, foreign investment worth NPR 4.466 billion was approved in 427 industries. This shows that although the number of projects has increased, the investment amount has slightly decreased.
