Monsoon Triggers Heavy Rain Alerts in Six Provinces, Flood and Landslide Risks Rise
An active monsoon system continues to affect Nepal, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to several provinces and increasing the risk of landslides, flash floods, and travel disruptions. According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, the heaviest rainfall is expected in parts of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces. The Himalayan and hilly regions are likely to experience the most intense downpours during the day, while the threat will extend into the night with very heavy rainfall also forecast for parts of Madhesh Province.
Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected across much of the country’s hilly regions and several Terai districts. Meteorologists said the monsoon trough remains slightly north of its normal position near the Terai belt, creating favorable conditions for widespread rainfall across the country.
Among major cities, Pokhara is expected to receive the heaviest rainfall, with an 80 percent chance of persistent heavy rain during both the day and night. Jiri and Taplejung are also likely to experience heavy rainfall, while Kathmandu is forecast to receive moderate rain with thunderstorms and temperatures ranging between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius. Authorities have urged residents living in vulnerable areas and travelers using hilly highways to remain cautious, as prolonged rainfall could trigger landslides, localized flooding, and road blockages in several districts.
