UK-Nepal Trade Forum Showcases Lucrative Tariff-Free Market Opportunities for Nepalese Exporters
An interactive trade symposium held in Kathmandu has cast a spotlight on the expansive commercial opportunities available to Nepalese businesses under the United Kingdom’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS). Organized to strengthen bilateral economic ties, the forum brought together prominent trade officials, industry leaders, and entrepreneurs to discuss how Nepal can maximize its duty-free and tariff-free market access to the UK. The initiative aims to significantly boost Nepal’s export volumes in key sectors, including ready-made garments, orthodox tea, handicrafts, and agro-processing products, providing a crucial economic buffer as the nation prepares to graduate from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.
During the sessions, trade experts provided comprehensive guidance on navigating the UK’s simplified rules of origin and stringent quality certification standards, which are designed to make importing from developing economies much easier. British diplomatic representatives emphasized that the DCTS framework offers one of the most generous preferential trading arrangements in the world, effectively removing tariffs on over 90% of Nepalese product categories. By addressing logistical bottlenecks and enhancing digital supply chain integration, the program seeks to empower local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to scale their operations globally. Attendees concluded that fostering strong bilateral compliance mechanisms and improving product standardization will be essential for Nepalese exporters to fully capitalize on this highly competitive European market landscape.
