Nepal’s New Passport Management System Goes Live with Three-Month Transition Phase
Nepal’s Department of Passport has launched a new passport service delivery system, marking the country’s largest-ever data migration in passport management. The upgraded platform became operational today after the secure transfer of passport records for nearly one crore Nepali citizens. According to the department, the new passport production and management system is designed to make services faster, more reliable, and more accessible for applicants across the country and abroad.
The department has, however, cautioned that temporary technical issues, slower system performance, and delays in passport processing and distribution may occur during the initial phase of implementation. It described these challenges as a normal part of any large-scale digital transition and assured the public that dedicated technical teams, departmental staff, and the system development company are working around the clock to monitor the system and resolve issues as quickly as possible.
To ensure a smooth transition, the department has requested people who do not urgently require passport services to postpone their applications during the expected three-month stabilisation period. Applicants with expired passports or those requiring renewals can continue to apply through their respective district administration offices, the Department of Passport, or Nepali diplomatic missions abroad, as per the existing process.
The department has also urged citizens to rely only on official information released through its website, authorised ministry communications, and other verified channels. It advised the public to avoid acting on unverified reports or social media posts regarding passport services during the transition period.
