Japan Recognises NMA’s Contribution to Mountain Tourism
The Embassy of Japan in Nepal has honoured the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) with the Ambassador’s Award for its role in organising the 70th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Mount Manaslu. Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Maeda Toru presented the award to NMA President Fur Gelje Sherpa at a ceremony in Kathmandu, recognising the association’s efforts to preserve Nepal’s mountaineering heritage and promote mountain tourism. The NMA organised anniversary commemorations on May 9 and 10 in Samagaun, Gorkha, and at the International Mountain Museum in Pokhara. Manaslu’s first successful ascent on May 9, 1956, by Japanese mountaineer Toshio Imanishi and Nepali climber Gyalzen Norbu marked a significant milestone in Himalayan mountaineering and further strengthened Nepal-Japan ties. Ambassador Maeda praised the NMA for its longstanding contribution to Nepal’s mountain tourism and said the anniversary events demonstrated its expertise in promoting the country’s mountaineering legacy. Receiving the award, Sherpa thanked Japan for its continued friendship and support for Nepal’s mountain tourism. The ceremony brought together Japanese Embassy officials, NMA representatives, advisers and former presidents. Ambassador Maeda also expressed condolences to the families and colleagues of mountaineers who lost their lives in the recent Broad Peak avalanche.
