India-Nepal Ties Gain Momentum Ahead of PM Balen Shah’s First India Visit
India and Nepal are looking to strengthen their longstanding partnership ahead of Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s first official visit to India on November 22. The diplomatic preparations gained momentum following Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s two-day visit to Kathmandu on November 4 and 5.
During the visit, Misri met Prime Minister Shah and conveyed greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Their discussions covered the progress of bilateral cooperation and possible initiatives that could be taken forward during Shah’s upcoming India visit.
Misri also held meetings with Nepal’s foreign, finance, energy and infrastructure ministers. In discussions with Nepali Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, both sides reviewed existing cooperation and explored opportunities to expand their partnership.
The talks covered several important sectors, including trade, commerce, hydropower, infrastructure, energy, border management and physical connectivity. Both countries also expressed interest in expanding cooperation in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, digital connectivity, start-ups and sports.
Nepal’s leadership appreciated India’s prompt humanitarian and technical assistance following the Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi floods. The two sides also acknowledged the importance of maintaining regular high-level diplomatic exchanges to strengthen mutual cooperation.
Misri’s visit comes at an important diplomatic moment, with Shah’s maiden India trip approaching. The upcoming meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for both countries to review their relationship, discuss shared priorities and identify fresh areas of collaboration.
