India and Nepal Discuss Bilateral Ties During Vikram Misri’s Kathmandu Visit

India and Nepal have discussed ways to strengthen their longstanding relationship during a meeting between Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Misri, who arrived in the Nepalese capital for a two-day official visit, paid a courtesy call on Khanal at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to Nepal’s Foreign Ministry, the discussions covered several areas of bilateral cooperation, including energy, trade, sports and education.

During the meeting, Khanal expressed confidence that the close relationship between the neighbouring countries would reach new heights. Both sides emphasised the importance of expanding their multifaceted partnership and maintaining their historical bonds of friendship.

Misri’s visit is primarily aimed at preparing the ground for Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s proposed official visit to New Delhi, expected towards the last week of November. He is also likely to meet the Nepalese Prime Minister during his stay.

The Indian Foreign Secretary travelled to Nepal at the invitation of his Nepalese counterpart, Amrit Bahadur Rai. He was welcomed at Tribhuvan International Airport by Nepal’s Joint Secretary Gehendra Rajbhandari and India’s newly appointed Ambassador to Nepal, Sudhakar Dalela.

This marks Misri’s second visit to Kathmandu since assuming office in July 2024. The visit highlights continued diplomatic engagement between India and Nepal, with both countries seeking to deepen cooperation across important sectors.
