Flood Threat Grows Across Nepal
A high-alert warning has been issued by the Flood Forecasting Division for Saturday due to a moderate danger of abrupt flash floods in 24 districts, including Kathmandu, the country’s capital.
The official advisory states that severe monsoon rains will cause water levels in smaller rivers, streams, and tributaries that flow through these places and their environs to rise significantly and quickly. The high-risk areas are spread over several provinces, from Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, Kavre, Makwanpur, and Chitwan in the central region to Taplejung, Solukhumbu, and Sankhuwasabha in the east.
The alert extends to the western and far-western districts of Palpa, Kaski, Tanahun, Syangja, Parbat, Baglung, Myagdi, Mustang, Rukum Paschim, Doti, Bajhang, Kailali, and Kanchanpur in addition to the three districts of the Kathmandu Valley: Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur. Residents who live close to rivers and in low-lying areas have been strongly advised by disaster management authorities to exercise extreme caution all day.
Local towns have been cautioned to keep a careful eye on water levels and get ready for possible emergency evacuations if heavy rainfall continues, since the main threat comes from abrupt surges in smaller, swift-moving rivers rather than bigger river basins.
