Department Warns of Three Days of Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of Nepal over the next three days as the monsoon becomes more active nationwide. Residents have been advised to remain alert for thunderstorms, flash floods, landslides and strong winds, particularly in vulnerable areas.

Today, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Koshi Province, while one or two locations in Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces are also likely to receive intense downpours. The hilly regions of Madhesh, Bagmati and Karnali provinces are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. Moderate snowfall is also possible in some high Himalayan areas.

The department has issued a “be prepared” alert for Sudurpaschim and parts of Gandaki and Lumbini for Tuesday, while other regions remain under a “be updated” advisory. Although rainfall is expected to ease slightly on Wednesday, isolated heavy showers and strong winds are likely to continue on Thursday, particularly in the hills and Terai.

Officials said widespread monsoon activity now covers 70 to 100 percent of the hilly and Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini. Residents are urged to follow weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas and take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of weather-related incidents.
