Nepal Police and APF Set Up Temporary Base in Bajura’s Conflict-Hit Area

A joint temporary security base has been established in Lampata, Himali Rural Municipality-3 of Bajura district, as authorities work to restore stability following a series of violent incidents that displaced local residents. The security deployment, comprising personnel from Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force (APF), arrived on Saturday after a three-day trek from the district headquarters in Martadi.

The 28-member team includes 21 APF personnel led by Inspector Janak Poudel and seven Nepal Police officers under Police Sub-Inspector Mitthu Bahadur Bohara. The temporary base will remain operational for three months, with security personnel conducting regular patrols in Lampata and the nearby Ranisain area. Authorities say the presence of security forces has helped improve the situation, encouraging displaced residents to return to their homes. A local child development centre that had been closed due to security concerns is also expected to reopen soon.

The deployment follows a series of attacks in May involving residents from neighbouring Humla district. Several local residents, government officials, and elected representatives were reportedly assaulted, while members of the Bhote community were forced from the Ranisain area and their livestock shelters set on fire. A tourism promotion team, including local government leaders, was also attacked.

Following the incidents, the Central Security Committee approved the establishment of the joint security base. Although cases have been filed against 23 individuals and arrest warrants issued, no arrests have been made so far. Local groups continue to demand accountability while authorities maintain efforts to ensure lasting peace and security in the region.
