UPI-NCHL Integration: Seamless Two-Way Funds Transfer Set to Begin for India and Nepal
In a landmark development for cross-border financial connectivity, Nepal and India have announced the operationalisation of peer-to-peer (P2P) digital payment transactions. The breakthrough mechanism will enable individuals in both countries to transfer money directly through linked national payment systems. The official announcement was made during bilateral talks between Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal and India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in New Delhi.
This milestone effectively bridges a critical gap in the existing digital payment ecosystem between the two neighbours. While Indian citizens previously enjoyed the convenience of scanning QR codes via India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at Nepali businesses, Nepali travelers in India lacked reciprocal access. The latest arrangement successfully extends this cooperation, facilitating direct, seamless peer-to-peer cross-border transactions for citizens on both sides.
The newly operationalized system functions under the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in June 2023 between Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). FinTech experts note that this integration is expected to vastly simplify trade, tourism, and personal remittances by eliminating traditional cross-border banking hurdles.
Beyond this financial breakthrough, Ministers Khanal and Jaishankar utilized the high-level meeting to review the progress of several ongoing bilateral projects and economic cooperation initiatives. Both leaders expressed a strong commitment to expediting the implementation of these joint ventures, underscoring a shared vision to modernize and deepen the economic and digital ties that bind the two close neighbors.
