Kathmandu Announces Major Initiative to Protect Himalayan Ecosystem
The Government of Nepal has unveiled a new mountain conservation plan aimed at preserving fragile Himalayan ecosystems affected by climate change and excessive tourism. The program, set to launch in mid-2025, will focus on reforestation, waste management, and sustainable trekking routes in regions like Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang.
Minister for Forests and Environment Birendra Mahato said Nepal is witnessing rapid glacier melt and biodiversity loss. “We are the guardians of the Himalayas. Protecting them means protecting Asia’s water sources,” he stated.
The initiative will engage local communities and offer incentives to eco-friendly tourism operators. International partners from India, Bhutan, and Switzerland have expressed interest in providing financial and technical support.
Environmentalists in Siliguri and Darjeeling regions have welcomed the move, suggesting cross-border collaboration to preserve Eastern Himalayan biodiversity.
