Young Women Lead Himalayan Tech Effort Against Climate Change
A pioneering team of young women in Nepal has launched the country’s first all-female drone mapping initiative, surveying glacial melt and deforestation in the Annapurna and Langtang regions.
Trained under a UNDP and local NGO program, the team is using high-resolution drone imagery to monitor changes in forest cover, water bodies, and landslide-prone zones. Their data is helping municipalities build early-warning systems for floods and climate-induced disasters.
The initiative is also drawing praise from Indian and Bangladeshi environmental bodies looking to empower rural women in STEM. Similar programs may be piloted in North Bengal and the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where terrain and climate vulnerabilities are comparable.
