Remittance Boom: Nepal’s Economy Gets $10 Billion Boost from Migrant Workers
Nepal has recorded an all-time high in remittances, with over $10 billion received in the past financial year, according to its central bank. The surge comes primarily from Nepali workers in the Gulf and Malaysia, where construction and service sector demand has risen sharply.
Government officials say the remittances have stabilized foreign reserves and boosted domestic consumption. However, labor rights groups warn that thousands of workers still face poor conditions, wage theft, and passport confiscation.
Many families in Nepal and even northern parts of West Bengal and Sikkim benefit from this inflow. Bilateral talks between India and Nepal on migrant protections are also being discussed in Delhi.
