GPS units and trail cameras are being put in KCA

UNESCO, KCAMC, and Samriddha Pahad are integrating modern scientific methods with Indigenous knowledge to install trail cameras and GPS devices in KCA for biodiversity monitoring from July 16-19, 2025. A two-day capacity-building training was held in Lelep on July 14-15 to encourage local community participation and environmental supervision within the KCA. The training improved indigenous people’s skills in biodiversity conservation and provided hands-on experience in handling modern scientific devices. The KCAMC Chairperson, Khagendra Phembu Limbu, discussed their current conservation initiatives, emphasizing their goal of locating hotspots for biodiversity and possible conservation pocket areas.

Prof. Dr. Hari Prasad Aryal, UNESCO MAB committee member, and NATCOM discussed the significance of integrating local knowledge with scientific tools to tackle biodiversity issues in high-altitude ecosystems like KCA, highlighting the strong participation of indigenous communities in this process. KCA is aiming to secure international recognition through the IUCN Green List and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation, aligning with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This initiative aims to achieve sustainable development goals and a world living in harmony with nature by 2050.
