In first week of spring climbing season, more than 80 people summited Sagarmatha

Over 80 mountaineers, including Nepal, successfully summited Sagarmatha, the world’s highest peak, marking a historic day for the 2025 spring climbing season. He claimed that the season began on May 9 and that further excursions were made possible by a rope-fixing crew consisting of seven Nepali climbers who reached the summit on May 11. The season is going well, according to Liladhar Awasthi, Director of the Department of Tourism. As larger groups are ready to capitalize on the usual mid-May weather window, more summit attempts are anticipated in the upcoming weeks. The department generated significant revenue in permit fees and permits for Sagarmatha, contributing to the national treasury and promoting improved safety protocols and waste management.

He stated that the department has established a makeshift camp at the base camp with four staff members to watch and gather information. Philipp II Santiago, a 45-year-old Filipino climber, passed away during his summit attempt on Wednesday, May 14, at around 7 p.m., as he was sleeping at Camp IV. The department reports that there have been other incidences during this climbing season, including two Sherpas going missing on. One climber perished on Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Makalu, and Mt. Kanchenjunga this season, in addition to Mt. Annapurna.
