For Shivaratri festival, more water from Melamchi was released into the Bagmati River

In anticipation of Shivaratri, water from Sindhupalchowk’s Melamchi River has been discharged into the Bagmati River. Ratna Lamichhane, executive director of the Melamchi Water Supply Development Board, says the water release will make it easier for devotees who want to take a ritual bath and will also make the river more beautiful during the festival. For this purpose, about 1,000 liters of water are released every second.
600 liters of water are discharged into the river every second during regular hours. 200 million of the 230 million liters of water that are transported from Melamchi each day are given to customers, with the remaining 30 million liters being dumped back into the river. It has contributed to the river’s relative cleanliness. The extra water release lasts until Thursday at 8:00 a.m.
