Public Health Precaution Leads to Indefinite Closure of Jawalakhel Zoo

The Central Zoo in Jawalakhel has been closed indefinitely after bird flu infections were detected among animals within the facility. The decision was announced by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), which stated that the closure took effect on June 19 and will remain in place until further notice.

According to the NTNC, the temporary shutdown has been implemented as a precautionary measure to protect public health and ensure the safety of visitors, staff, and animals. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are expected to carry out necessary health and containment measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, is a viral infection that primarily affects birds but can occasionally spread to other animals. The detection of infections inside the zoo prompted immediate action from management to reduce potential risks and allow veterinary experts to assess the situation thoroughly.

The zoo administration expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to visitors and thanked the public for their patience and understanding during the closure. Officials have not yet announced a reopening date, stating that operations will resume only after the facility is deemed safe.

The Jawalakhel Central Zoo is one of Nepal’s most popular wildlife attractions, drawing thousands of visitors each year. Authorities have urged the public to follow official updates regarding the zoo’s status and any further developments related to the outbreak.
