Nepal Faces Mixed Weather: Heavy Rain in Hills, Extreme Heat in Tarai

Monsoon activity remains active across eastern Nepal, bringing the likelihood of rainfall and thunderstorms to several hilly and mountainous regions, while heatwave conditions continue to affect parts of the western Tarai. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, generally cloudy conditions are expected over the hilly and Himalayan regions and the Tarai of Koshi Province throughout the day.

Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at a few places in the hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, while isolated rainfall is expected in parts of Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces. Light to moderate rain is also forecast for sections of the Tarai regions in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

Meteorologists said monsoon winds are currently influencing all areas of Koshi, Madhesh and Bagmati provinces, along with parts of Gandaki and eastern Lumbini Province. The rest of the country remains under the partial influence of westerly and local winds.

Among major cities, Kathmandu, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Okhaldhunga and Taplejung are expected to receive moderate rainfall and thundershowers. Kathmandu’s maximum temperature is forecast to range between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius, while Pokhara may record temperatures between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, heatwave conditions are likely in Nepalgunj and Dhangadi, where temperatures could reach 41 and 40 degrees Celsius respectively. Similar hot day conditions are expected in Birendranagar, Bhairahawa and Ghorahi.
