Floods Cause Massive Damage to Nepal’s Energy Sector
Devastating floods in Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers have caused preliminary damage of around Rs 390.62 billion to the country’s energy sector, with more than 800 people reported missing at several hydropower projects.
Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha told the House of Representatives that the missing include 47 Nepal Electricity Authority employees and hundreds of project workers. Eleven power plants have been shut down, resulting in a loss of 410 MW from the national grid.The government is considering relief measures for affected consumers, including tariff concessions and free replacement of electricity meters.
Meanwhile, the parliamentary session witnessed heated exchanges over the judiciary. Ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party lawmakers called for judicial reforms, while opposition MPs objected to remarks concerning a sub-judice Supreme Court matter and sought their removal from the parliamentary record.
