The Health Ministry doubles the incentives for organ donation

The financial incentive for families of posthumous organ donors has been increased by the Ministry of Health and Population, reaching NPR 200,000 per household. In the past, the Human Organ Transplant Centre in Bhaktapur gave NPR 100,000 to families. The decision to increase the incentive was agreed by Home Minister Pradip Paudel on Sunday. The NPR 50,000 that was previously given to hospitals that facilitate organ donations has been increased to NPR 75,000 per case. This increase was authorized by the Finance Ministry through internal resource reallocation.

Every year, the Human Organ Transplant Centre reported processing over 1,000 requests for kidney transplants and 55 requests for liver transplants. The facility contributes to around 70% of the nation’s total organ transplants by performing about 200 kidney transplants and 20 liver transplants annually. In Nepal, posthumous organ donation is legal. In addition to the Human Organ Transplant Centre, organ transplant services are offered by Bir Hospital, TUTH in Maharajgunj, and a number of private institutions.
