Nepal’s Security Personnel Lead Rescue Efforts in Flood-Hit Areas

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has praised Nepal’s security forces for their response to the devastating Bhotekoshi flood that struck parts of Nuwakot on August 26. At the Central Prison in Bidur Municipality-6, 52 security personnel acted swiftly to move all 923 inmates to an upper building after floodwaters, mud and debris entered the compound and damaged key infrastructure, including the administrative building, security post and perimeter wall. The breach allowed 50 inmates to escape up to 100 metres from the prison, but all were later brought under control. Some security personnel were injured during attacks by inmates amid the crisis. Despite damaged roads, disrupted water supplies and difficult access, security personnel have continued guarding the prison and carrying water from distant sources. Shah said the incident reflects the broader efforts of the Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force across flood-affected areas. According to his post, the three agencies have rescued 13,391 people through road and helicopter operations, including injured and stranded residents. However, the rescue effort has come at a heavy cost, with 45 Nepali Army personnel, 25 Nepal Police personnel and 12 Armed Police Force personnel still missing. Thousands of security personnel remain deployed in affected areas, supported by helicopters, medical teams, divers, rope-rescue units, drones and canine teams. Shah expressed gratitude to the personnel and their families, reaffirming the government’s commitment to their safety, welfare and service conditions.
