Nepal Pushes Local Goods In Government Procurement
The Nepal government has directed all state agencies to prioritize locally produced goods and services in public procurement, following instructions from Prime Minister Balendra (Balen) Shah.
The directive applies to federal and provincial ministries, local bodies, and Nepali diplomatic missions abroad. Government offices have been asked to prioritize domestic products such as stationery, furniture, construction materials and food items. Official meetings, ceremonies and government gifts will also be required to feature Nepali handicrafts. The local-preference requirement must be included in bidding and tender documents.
Authorities will conduct regular monitoring and quarterly inspections to ensure compliance. The government said the initiative aims to support Nepali businesses, create jobs, reduce imports and stimulate domestic economic activity.
