Nepal Reopens Thori Crossing to Indian Vehicles, Reviving Local Tourism

Indian-registered four-wheel vehicles have resumed entry into Nepal through the Thori border crossing in Parsa after authorities lifted restrictions introduced on June 19 that required customs declaration documents for entry. The previous rule had forced many Indian tourists to travel an additional 60 to 70 kilometres to Birgunj to complete customs formalities, prompting many to abandon their trips.

The restrictions had a significant impact on Thori’s tourism industry, affecting hotels, resorts, restaurants and other local businesses that rely heavily on visitors travelling to the region’s national parks and nature-based attractions. Tourism operators reported a sharp decline in tourist arrivals during the period of restricted access.

Following coordination among the relevant authorities, Indian vehicles can now enter Nepal through the Thori Small Customs Office by obtaining a free facility pass. The revised arrangement restores convenient access to Thori Bazaar and nearby tourist destinations, offering relief to both visitors and local businesses.

The reopening follows strong appeals from tourism entrepreneurs, business owners and residents, who urged the government to restore cross-border movement. The Tourism Development Committee, Thori, had also submitted a memorandum to the Parsa District Administration Office, calling for the immediate reopening of the border crossing. Local stakeholders expect the decision to revive tourism, strengthen cross-border travel and support the region’s economy.
