Ramechhap Women Promote Equality Through Traditional Music
In Makadum of Khandadevi Rural Municipality-6, Ramechhap, a group of non-Dalit women has begun learning traditional musical instruments that have historically been played only by members of the Dalit community. The initiative marks a positive step toward breaking long-standing caste barriers while promoting social inclusion through music.
The women say they decided to learn the instruments because they believe music is a shared cultural heritage that belongs to everyone, regardless of caste. Their goal is to participate independently in local cultural, religious, and social events without relying on others to perform the music.
Local resident Keshav KC said the initiative has created new enthusiasm in the village and hopes it will boost the confidence of participating women. He also believes the effort will help reduce caste-based discrimination and encourage greater social harmony within the community.
Local elected representatives and community members have welcomed the programme, describing it as an important example of positive social change. They say the initiative not only preserves traditional music but also promotes awareness of equality and inclusion.
The women involved in the training view their participation as a practical demonstration of women’s empowerment. Rather than waiting for change through policies alone, they have chosen to challenge traditional social norms by learning skills once considered exclusive to a particular caste. Community members hope the initiative will inspire similar efforts in other villages, helping to promote equality, preserve cultural traditions, and strengthen social unity through the universal language of music.
