Nepal SC Seeks Grounds for Durga Prasai’s Detention
The Supreme Court of Nepal has directed authorities to explain the legal basis and reasons for the detention of medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai.
A single bench of Justice Hari Prasad Phuyal issued a show-cause notice on Wednesday while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Prasai’s wife, Uma Prasai, challenging his detention as illegal. The court directed Nepal Police headquarters, the Cyber Bureau in Bhotahity and other concerned agencies to submit written explanations.
Prasai was arrested from his residence in Bhaktapur by the Cyber Bureau. The Kathmandu District Court had on September 28 authorised police to keep him in custody for three days for an investigation into alleged cybercrime carried out through online platforms. Police said the remand was sought to facilitate the investigation. Prasai has previously been arrested and released in connection with several other allegations.
