Heavy rain, gusty winds to hit western Nepal as monsoon stays active
Gusty winds are expected to accompany thunderstorms in parts of western Nepal on Thursday as the active monsoon system continues to bring heavy rainfall to several hill districts, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said.
According to the department’s latest forecast, Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces face the combined risk of moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds, while heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Karnali provinces, as well as the hilly and Terai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim.
Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is forecast at many places across the country’s hilly region and at scattered locations in the Terai. Light to moderate snowfall or rainfall is also expected in parts of the Himalayan region.The department said the country remains under the influence of the monsoon. The monsoon trough currently lies close to its average position over eastern Nepal, while remaining slightly north of normal in the western region.
Among major cities, Kathmandu and Pokhara are expected to receive moderate rain with thundershowers, while Simara could record the highest daytime temperature of 34–36 degrees Celsius. Pokhara has one of the highest chances of rainfall among major urban centres.
The department has advised the public, particularly residents of flood- and landslide-prone areas, as well as travellers, to remain alert as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms could disrupt normal life in vulnerable locations.
