Dr. Govinda KC Concludes 24th Hunger Strike Following Seven-Point Accord with Government

Senior orthopedic surgeon and medical reform activist Dr. Govinda KC has ended his 24th hunger strike after signing a comprehensive seven-point agreement with government officials to address longstanding shortcomings in Nepal’s medical education and healthcare systems. The 66-year-old crusader broke his fast by sipping juice offered by a young patient at the hospital where he was admitted following a rapid decline in his vital health parameters. Under the newly negotiated framework, the government has committed to implementing strict regulatory oversight over medical colleges, ensuring transparent fee structures, and accelerating the establishment of state-run medical institutions in underserved regions across the country. Additionally, the agreement pledges to operationalize key provisions of the Medical Education Act, reform the appointment process for leadership roles at university hospitals to prevent political nepotism, and investigate administrative irregularities within the medical sector. While Dr. KC’s medical team confirmed he remains under close observation to monitor his recovery from severe dehydration and physical weakness, civil society leaders and health advocates welcomed the breakthrough while urging authorities to ensure timely execution of the agreed terms rather than letting implementation falter as in previous accords.
