New Role Ahead: Biraj Bhakta Shrestha Tipped as Energy Minister

Biraj Bhakta Shrestha is poised to assume the position of Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation. Elected to the House of Representatives from Kathmandu Constituency-8 on March 5, securing 24,592 votes, Shrestha had also previously won from this constituency in the 2022 elections. His political trajectory includes a brief tenure as Minister for Youth and Sports, where he gained recognition for his initiatives aimed at reforming the sports sector and enhancing athlete morale. Shrestha’s political journey began in 2017 when he was elected as a proportional representation member of the Bagmati Provincial Assembly. With a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, he initially embarked on his career in hotel and restaurant management, participating in various development projects before becoming engaged in social work, particularly in response to the 2015 earthquake.

He founded “Force Nepal,” leading environmental campaigns such as “One Tree – My Responsibility,” which significantly bolstered his engagement with grassroots communities. Shrestha’s entry into national politics was facilitated through the Bibeksheel Sajha movement, alongside Ujwal Thapa. His previous legislative experience and his time in the Cabinet equip Shrestha for his new role as the leader of the Energy Ministry.
