New Trade Link Expected to Boost Cross-Border Commerce in Himalayas

Nepal and China have agreed to expand the capacity and infrastructure of the Lhasa-Kerung land port, a key trade route connecting the Tibet Autonomous Region with Nepal. The announcement was made during a high-level bilateral meeting in Beijing. Under the agreement, improved customs facilities, broader road networks, and an expanded dry port will be developed on the Nepal side.
The route is expected to facilitate the smoother movement of goods such as electronics, construction materials, and agricultural products. Nepal aims to reduce its dependency on Indian ports for trade with China.
For India and Bangladesh, this development is being monitored as it may shift regional trade dynamics and logistics. Experts argue that if managed properly, the route could also benefit eastern South Asia through increased trilateral trade connectivity.
