Women painters are empowered by Mithila arts

One well-known Mithila artist in Nepal is Sunaina Thakur. Thakur became interested in Mithila art after reading about it in the textbook for class 7. She disregarded her family’s and society’s expectations by embracing Mithila art. She has 15 Mithila artists working for her. She had to cut her staff from 25 to 15 in order to maintain her Mithila painting business after the COVID-19 pandemic. The Janaki Mandir grounds house Thakur’s Mithila Art Gallery, where she has established a venue to present Mithila art to visitors. Thakur’s path to her current role has not been straightforward. She encountered numerous obstacles during her journey. Through her Mithila paintings, Thakur has addressed social issues like violence against women and won multiple awards. Her work has been shown all over the world.

A major accomplishment for Soman, a 33-year-old resident of Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City, is her successful career as a Mithila painter. Soman, a well-known painter and educator, has taught Mithila art to more than 40 people. She became commercialized after selling her first painting for 100 Indian rupees. An essential component of Mithila’s identity is their paintings. The government ought to do more to promote this art form and inspire the next generation to learn it. Women now have a place to work and a way to leave the house thanks to mithila painting.
