Youth-Led Movement Forces PM’s Resignation, Social Media Ban Lifted

Youth protesters demanding action against corruption and the lifting of a social media ban forced their way into Nepal’s Federal Parliament on September 9, setting parts of it ablaze. In the run-up, 19 protesters—including a child—were killed as security forces used lethal force.

Massive outcry and nationwide demonstrations forced Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli to resign. The government reversed the decision to ban 26 social media platforms, acknowledging public backlash.

Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, the first woman to hold the post, has been installed, and elections are expected in 2026. Protesters, largely from Generation Z, have vowed to continue pressure for systemic reform and transparency.
