This year, 72% of the paddy plantations have been finished
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, as of July, paddy seedling plantations had decreased by 13%, while 72% of the nation’s land was covered. Paddy cultivation occupies 1.4 million hectares in India, with Sudurpaschim leading the way with 97% of its target covered. Lumbini and Karnali provinces make up 88% of the target. The ministry estimates that 98% of the target will be reached by mid-August. 98% of the paddy plantation should be finished by then.
About 70% of the nation’s paddy is produced in the most fertile Tarai region, with the remaining 30% coming from the hilly regions, spokeswoman Joshi said. The country produced 5.724 million metric tonnes of rice in FY 2023-2024, but delays due to droughts, heavy rainfall, and weather affect paddy plantations. A 10% increase in rice production could impact the GDP by about 1%. This year, 3.5 million metric tonnes of edible rice will be produced, out of an estimated 6 million metric tonnes.
