The world’s highest rice-growing altitude, Chhumchaur, is where Marsi rice is planted

Marshi paddy planting continues in Chhum Jyulo, Jumla’s highest rice altitude, under Kalimarsi Rice Promotion and Conservation Centre initiative, preserving marsi rice. 22nd Paddy Day was observed with the motto “plant Jumli marsi rice, protect rice cultivation at the highest altitude in the world,” according to the District Agricultural Development Office. Representatives of the rural municipality, ward councils, local government, the District Agricultural Development Office, the Veterinary Hospital, the Animal Service Office, and the local population were present when the marsi rice was planted.
People’s representatives in Chhumchaur village, Patarasi Rural Municipality, Jumla, are encouraging farmers to plant local marsi paddy with local music, songs, and Deuda song to preserve indigenous marsi rice. Kalimarsi rice planting in Chhumchaur village has increased interest, with the municipality actively planting paddy since 2021 BS, bringing seeds from Chandannath Temple’s Shera Jyolo. Chief Ram Bhakta Adhikari of the Agricultural Development Office in Jumla prioritizes marsi rice conservation and celebrated Paddy Day in Chhumchaur Jyulo.
