Seventy-seven percent of mango production comes from Madhes

Madhes Province, known as the capital of mangoes, produces over 40 varieties of the fruit, both commercially and traditionally, with some farmers cultivating them in large gardens. Madhesh Province, with a vast mango cultivation area of 29,099 hectares, is the leading producer of 77.1 per cent of the country’s mangoes. Madhes Province’s eight districts, including Siraha, produce around 104,600 tonnes of mangoes annually, with Nepal Hotel and Tourism Entrepreneurs Association urging government emphasis on systematic marketing.

He emphasized the need of promoting mango-based cuisines like pickles and sukuti and stated that in order to stop the importation of mangoes from other countries, the focus should now be on storing mangoes grown locally. Madhes Province plans to expand mango production, promote ‘Mango Garden, Prosperity of Madhes’ slogan, and produce mango-based dishes for domestic and international consumption. The provincial government’s ‘Mango Mission Programme’ has plans to set up a processing facility, store the mangoes, and export them to other nations, Minister Kshetri stated.
