Real-Time Alerts Poised to Save Lives in Seismic Zones
Nepal has activated a first-of-its-kind seismic early warning system across the Kathmandu Valley, employing 15 advanced sensors to detect early tremors and send mobile alerts to residents within seconds of detection. The system is integrated with municipal emergency protocols, enabling immediate evacuation guidance for schools, hospitals, and businesses. Funded through a blend of government and international grants, this initiative aims to reduce casualties in Nepal’s high-risk urban centers. Regional authorities in Indian Himalayas and Bangladesh’s Sylhet region are exploring similar technologies to bolster earthquake preparedness in densely populated foothill zones.
