Nepal Plans New International Airport to Boost Tourism

The Government of Nepal has unveiled plans to build a new international airport in the western city of Butwal to reduce pressure on Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan Airport and attract more global tourists. The project, estimated to cost USD 1.8 billion, will be financed through a mix of foreign investment and government funding.

Officials stated that the new airport will feature modern terminals, extended runways, and eco-friendly technology powered by solar energy. The project is expected to generate over 10,000 jobs during the construction phase.

Tourism experts believe the new facility will help revive Nepal’s travel sector, which suffered severe setbacks after the pandemic. India-based travel agencies have also expressed interest in promoting joint tourism packages connecting Nepal’s Buddhist circuit with Indian destinations like Bodh Gaya and Sarnath.
