Kathmandu to Begin Construction of Rapid Transit by 2026
Nepal’s federal government has approved a long-awaited metro rail project in Kathmandu, with construction slated to begin in early 2026. The first phase will cover a 20-kilometre stretch from Gongabu to Satdobato, easing traffic congestion and pollution in the capital.
The project will be implemented with support from a Korean infrastructure agency and includes provisions for local employment and green construction standards.
The metro project draws parallels to India’s Tier-II cities like Lucknow and Guwahati, where urban transit is being modernized to manage rapid population growth.
