Kathmandu Expands Climate Defense with Real-Time Flood Alerts

Nepal’s government has unveiled its first national glacial lake monitoring system, consisting of over 30 sensors placed across lakes at risk of sudden bursting due to climate change. The system feeds real-time data to a central alert center linked with mobile emergency services.

Early warning trials showed reduced false alarms and faster response during monsoon threats. The project is funded by a mix of state revenue and international climate grants.

Experts in northern India and Bangladesh’s Chattogram Hills are coordinating to replicate cross-border early warning systems, aiming to streamline flood disaster responses in the Himalayas.
