In Jumla, irrigation canal reconstruction is accelerating

The reconstruction of damaged irrigation canals in Jumla, caused by floods and landslides in 2022, has begun. The floods destroyed dozens of houses and canals, resulting in the loss of 10 lives, and have since improved the situation. Rice planting has been halted due to damaged irrigation canals, but reconstruction is underway in various locations. Out of 92 projects, 42 are related to drinking water and irrigation. Flood-damaged canals in Guthichaur Rural Municipality Ward 4 and Tila Ward 4 have been reconstructed, with over a dozen others completed in the last fiscal year. Engineer Netra Raj Regmi reported that Devar village canal, Mofla canal, Uparkhet canal, and Mathi canal irrigation projects were also completed.

Technical estimates suggest a Rs. 30-40 million reconstruction of a 2-kilometer canal, requiring federal government investment to avoid a five to six-year completion time.
