In 2024, more over 4,000 foreign visitors toured Upper Mustang

In 2024, Upper Mustang, located in Nepal’s Mustang District, attracted approximately 4,000 foreign visitors, marking a 14.20% increase from the previous year. The area, known as “The Forbidden Kingdom,” was once a restricted monarchy and is known for its monasteries and vibrant Buddhist culture, despite its remoteness from the outside world.

Upper Mustang, a hidden gem in Nepal’s Himalayas, experienced a significant increase in international visitors in 2024, according to Office Chief Umesh Poudel. The rise can be attributed to improved transportation, Annapurna Circuit Trek’s global ranking, increased advertising, and the operation of luxurious hotels, indicating a growing interest in this hidden gem.

In 2022, Upper Mustang attracted 3,112 foreign visitors, a rise from 332 in 2021, 62 in 2020, and 3,918 in 2019. The isolated area, once a separate monarchy, offers a unique blend of topography, history, and scenic beauty, captivating both explorers and cultural enthusiasts with its breathtaking scenery and rich cultural legacy.
