Heavy Rains, Landslides Kill at Least 47 in Nepal

Torrential rainfall since last Friday has triggered landslides and flash floods across eastern Nepal, killing at least 47 people and leaving several missing.

The Ilam district, bordering India, was the hardest hit—35 fatalities alone were linked to landslides there. Additional deaths occurred from lightning strikes and floodwaters.

Roads and bridges have been washed away, cutting off remote communities. Authorities opened all 56 sluice gates on the Koshi Barrage and suspended vehicular traffic on its bridge to manage rising water levels.

International flights remain operational, but internal movement is significantly disrupted. Rescue teams—including helicopters and ground units—are racing to reach isolated villages.

For Nepal media, the focus is on disaster response and relief; for regional/Indian publication, it emphasizes cross-border flood impacts and regional weather risks.
