Everest to Have Visitor Limit to Preserve Environment and Safety
The Nepal government is planning to introduce a cap on the number of climbers allowed on Mount Everest starting in 2026. Officials from the Tourism Ministry said the move is aimed at reducing congestion, improving safety, and protecting the mountain’s fragile environment.
According to reports, more than 900 climbers attempted to summit Everest during the 2024 season — a record high — leading to severe overcrowding and waste management problems. Under the new rule, only a limited number of climbing permits will be issued each year.
Tourism Minister Hit Bahadur Tamang said, “We are not restricting tourism but ensuring responsible mountaineering.” Nepal, which earns millions of dollars annually from Everest expeditions, hopes to promote sustainable adventure tourism while maintaining global safety standards.
