Everest Base Camp to Get High-Altitude Recycling Facility
In a bid to preserve its pristine mountain ecology, the Government of Nepal has launched the ‘Clean Himalaya’ campaign, which includes the construction of a recycling and waste segregation unit at Everest Base Camp.
Every climbing season, thousands of trekkers and climbers leave behind non-biodegradable waste. The campaign mandates climbers to carry back at least 8 kg of waste or face penalties. The new facility will handle plastic, cans, oxygen bottles, and e-waste.
South Asian adventure operators, including firms in Sikkim, Ladakh, and Bhutan, are applauding the move. Many are proposing cross-border eco-tourism policies to protect the fragile Himalayan belt collectively.
