Eco-Friendly Transit Boosts Himalayan Tourism

Nepal has inaugurated its first electric cable car line in Pokhara, a major step toward sustainable tourism. The 2.3-km long ride connects Phewa Lake to Sarangkot, offering panoramic views while reducing vehicular traffic and pollution in the popular hill city.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who flagged off the cable car, said it represents “a shift towards eco-tourism and clean transport in the Himalayas.” Built by a Nepalese-Swiss joint venture, the project is expected to attract over 5,000 visitors daily.

Northeast India’s tourism bodies in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh are taking note of Nepal’s model, exploring possibilities for similar eco-projects in hill stations facing pressure from growing domestic tourism.
