China-Nepal Power Pact: Big Boost to Himalayan Energy Grid

China and Nepal have signed a landmark $1.5 billion deal to build three new hydropower projects along the Arun and Tamor rivers. The agreement was finalized during Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent visit to Kathmandu.

Nepal’s government says the projects will double national energy production within five years and allow for electricity exports to India and Bangladesh.

Indian observers are watching the developments closely, especially as New Delhi also has strategic energy projects in the region. Experts suggest that cooperation—not competition—between regional players could turn Nepal into a clean energy hub for South Asia.
