Because of the intense cold, 93 community schools in Solukhumbu have suspended classes
Because of the extreme cold, 93 community schools in the Solukhumbu district have suspended classes. After the extreme cold made it difficult to conduct classes, seven local governments declared a winter break for the community schools in their jurisdiction. Since last November, the schools have been progressively closing, according to Prakanda Neupane, Information Officer of the Education Development and Coordination Unit, Solukhumbu.
Ninety-three of the district’s 289 community schools have been closed for the winter break. With the exception of Sotang Rural Municipality, all eight local levels in the district have declared winter holidays. In the upper part of the district, the temperature has dropped to minus 20 degrees Celsius, according to Nawaraj Parajuli, a staff member at the Salleri Weather Station. Even in the Salleri region, the temperature has fallen to below zero.
